The Marawi Mental Health Mission 2018

“SPROUT: Speak Out, Reach Out! A Mental Health Mission in Conflicted, Geographically-isolated, and Disadvantaged Areas” is a project pitched by the Youth for Mental Health Coalition last 16 August 2017 in the Angat Buhay Youth Summit 2017 spearheaded by the Office of the Vice President of the Philippines. Initially, the project won a grant amounting to Php25,000 from San Miguel Corporation after being part of the Top 10 Awardees.

To answer the immediate call of the times, the project heads decided to implement a week-long Mental Health Mission in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur. The objective of the project is to provide psychological first aid (FPA) to the the internally-displaced persons (IDPs), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and/or occupational therapy depending on the needs assessment per community, as well as referrals to medical/psychiatric/psychological services and capacity building activities for youth mental health advocates in the area.

This project is set to happen from January 2 to 8, 2018. A total of 100 volunteers: 35 of which are from Manila, and 65 of which are from Mindanao; will help 100 IDPs per day. A total of 500 IDPs will be served. As for the capacity building seminar, there will be a total of 50 participants. There will be 30 psychologists that will help conduct the mental health mission. 30 officials and 40 police will oversee the entire event. For the week-long project, there will be a total of 760 people involved.
